Its concert review time!?

Friday May 23, 2008

Give a quick review of the last show you went to! I’ll get the ball rolling!

Its been almost 20 years but I finally got to see Death Angel & TestAmenT on the same bill! I was in the front for all of Death Angel and for most of Testament until someone punched me in the kidney so hard I almost pissed my pants! After all the years apart Testament still sounded as heavy as ever!
Where do you live you don’t get good shows? The bible belt. We have been spoiled with this concert lounge we have in town. They bring in some pretty good shows.
I elbowed someone right in the nose I think I got the right guy. I might go see Death Angel again at Harpo’s in June.

It's been a few years for me … Anthrax/Megadeth/the Crue in 2000. Great show. That's the only time I've ever seen Megadeth live, and they are just as efficient when playing live as they are in the studio. It was amazing.

Kings X at a club called The Varsity. It was a few years ago, but they were tight. Actually I saw The Cult there about the same time, but I don't remember the order, but they sounded as good at their recordings. We don't get a lot of good shows here.

edit - Baton Rouge - Jimmy Swaggart still runs this town. New Orleans always had great venues like HOB, Tipitinas, The Saengar, and two arenas, but since Katrina it has been slim pickens. King Dimond canceled and I was out of town for Ministry 2 weeks ago.

I went to a concert at the Arco Arena outside of Sacramento. The bands playing were Linkin Park, Coheed And Cambria, and Chiodos. I was really excited, because I had already seen all of these bands live and they all put on a VERY amazing show. Chiodos got the crowd going immediately with some nice breakdowns and hXc screaming. Coheed put us in awe with power stances, amazing solos, and Jimi Hendrix-status guitar tricks. Then Linkin Park put on the most amazing show I have EVER seen. They came out of the floor (not too original I know), and after their regular encore, they came back on for ANOTHER encore! HOW AMAZING IS THAT?!

At any rate…my friend Paul was with us. He HATES LP, but when he saw them…he said he was very impressed. The same went for my sister, who really doesn't like Coheed. Overall, it was easily the best concert I've ever seen.

Klaxons in November [2007]

There were two opening bands who were SHlT, but then they came on and played extremely well. It was a tiny venue and all the under 18's had to go upstairs [woo!], so they were out of the way. I got to the barrier and it was a great gig, second time I've seen them :)

went to go check out Tool at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater outside of Birmingham last May, and they put on a great show. They sounded great, Maynard's vocals were perfect. Awesome laser show as well. The only complaint I had was that they did not play older material, and they only played for 2 hours.

Dude, didn't you hit him back? And damn you to hell for getting to see Testament. Im actually going to see D.A. in Atlanta this summer.

It was actually two shows ago, I saw Avenged Sevenfold at the Electric Factory. I also discovered I liked Black Tide. It was a phenomenal show. A7X can really melt your face. All in a good sense. But my friend, my dad and I were all standing near the mosh pit and a guy (who looked out-of-it) fell on my friend, dropping to the floor and started having a seizure. Everyone was stunned and just stared at him, flopping like a fish out of water. Until a few guys and my dad picked him up and started walking him over to a bouncer. He fell once again, but they quickly recovered him from the ground. The bouncer took him and carried him off. I'm hoping he was alright. It was very scary; I'm only 13 and that's the only time I've seen someone have a seizure. I pray it's the last. But on a good note, Synyster Gates looked deliciously hot that night!!

This weekend I went to The Vandals, Unwritten Law, Authority Zero, and Hot Water Music. Hot Water Music brought little to the evening. Authority Zero played an excellent set, showcasing their abilities to mix punk, ska and reggae into something very much their own. Unwritten Law played fine as the "headliner" but it was for an audience about 1/4 the size as the band preceding them. The Vandals were the highlight of the evening. They played an amazing show, full of energy and their unique brand of wit, without missing a beat. Warren Fitzgerald's mastery of Don't Stop Me Now by Queen was an excellent close to the set (and evening for many) that would have made Freddie Mercury proud!

Saturday night ~ May 3rd
Progressive Nation 2008
Headliner: Dream Theater
Others: Opeth, Between the Buried and Me; Three

Of the 3 opening acts, Three was by far the best. Great tunes.
BtBaM and Opeth ~ both had way too much cookie monster / head banging -type stuff & not enough tuneful stuff for me. Opeth was better, tho ~ would occasionally break into a melody…
And Dream Theater ~ my newest loves ~ were *very* good. Played for an hour and a half ~ SMOKING guitars, singing, drumming & songs. Very happy with them! Good light / video show, too.

Was held at a beautiful place, the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, CA. Built in the early 1930s and totally renovated Art Deco:

Sax Player:

Asia-House of Blues, Chicago on April 20.
Steve Howe (from Yes) pretty much stole the show on guitar. Carl Palmer (ELP) also did a great drum solo. "Fanfare for the Common Man" was the best song–Howe trading riffs with the keyboard player (Geoff Downes), great jam! They played "Roundabout" by Yes–instrumentally good, but John Wetton can't sing like Jon Anderson.

Two weeks ago I went to see Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo. Had great seats in the 10th row and they were both great. Her voice sounds as good as it did in the 80's and his guitar playing was incredible. She did all her big hits and they were very friendly with the fans, talking and shaking hands with just about everyone who went up to the stage.
